The main accused in the alleged harassment and molestation of a minor girl and her male companion in Jamui was shot in the leg during a police encounter in the area under the Town Police Station on Tuesday.

 

The police action followed the circulation of a video on social media that purportedly showed a group of youths harassing and molesting the girl and her companion. The accused has been identified as Nandan Yadav.

 

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said the government would take strict action against everyone involved in the incident. He said a case had been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

 

At a press conference, Chaudhary said those found guilty would face the strictest punishment. He also said action would be taken against individuals involved in creating and circulating the video, apart from those allegedly involved in the incident.

 

Chaudhary said efforts were underway to identify all the accused. When asked about the reported encounter involving Nandan Yadav, he said he did not have information about it at that time.

 

Bihar Minister Shrawon Kumar described the incident as tragic and shameful, saying that the police had acted promptly. He said those arrested and others found guilty would not be spared and that the government was working to prevent such incidents in the future.

 

State Women's Commission Chairperson Ashwamedh Devi said an FIR had been registered against 120 people, including the person who released the video. She said two arrests had been made and that further arrests were in progress.

 

ADG (Law and Order) KS Anupam said the incident occurred on September 19, when the minor girl had gone to take photographs with her friend in Jamui. Some minor students and youths allegedly reached the spot and molested her.

 

After receiving the information, police visited the girl's residence and recorded her statement. Jamui police subsequently apprehended three minors, while information was also received about the involvement of two other individuals.

 

The case has been registered under several sections, including the POCSO Act. Further investigation is underway.
