A man died after a mob in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, beat him all night, allegedly thinking he had stolen a tractor, the police said. They continued to beat him while he begged for mercy. Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The attack took place in Yogiya village, about 70 km from Patna. The man, identified as Shambhu Sahni, was said to be with three other men, but they managed to escape.
Shambhu was taken to a hospital by the police, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Disturbing pictures from the crime scene show Shambhu, dressed in beige trousers, a sky-blue shirt, and a grey jacket, lying motionless on the ground. His bare feet were tied to an auto with rope, and his hands were also tied.
Hay was stuck to his face and hair. People stood nearby, recording the scene on their phones.
Villagers claimed that Shambhu and his friends had come to steal the tractor. The tractor owner heard the noise and chased the thieves, catching Shambhu.
"The young man was accused of stealing a tractor, and the tractor owner, along with some criminals, beat him to death," said Abhijeet Alkesh, the police station in-charge of Aurai police station in Muzaffarpur.
The tractor owner, Ganga Sahni, and his nephew, Pukar Sahni, have been arrested as the main suspects in the murder.
