A rare archival photograph captures 18-year-old Khudiram Bose, the youngest martyr of India’s freedom struggle, being led to the gallows in Muzaffarpur, moments before his execution in 1908.
Tributes poured in on Sunday at Bihar's Muzaffarpur Central Jail, where freedom fighter Khudiram Bose was hanged by British authorities on this day in 1908.
Bose, known as the youngest martyr of India’s independence movement, was honoured by a large gathering that included officials and people from various walks of life.
Khudiram Bose, just 18 at the time, was sentenced to death for attempting to assassinate British Magistrate Douglas Kingsford.
Along with his associate Prafulla Chaki, Bose had lobbed bombs at a carriage they believed was carrying Kingsford. The attack, however, mistakenly killed two British women instead.
Leading the tributes were Divisional Commissioner of Tirhut Division Mihir Kumar Singh, Inspector General of Police Shivdeep Wamanrao Lande, and District Magistrate of Muzaffarpur Subrata Sen.
They were joined by hundreds, including visitors from Bose’s ancestral village in Habibpur, Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal.
The gathering paid homage to Bose at the Khudiram Bose Memorial in Company Bagh, where the freedom fighter had executed his daring act alongside Chaki.
While Prafulla Chaki took his own life to avoid capture, Bose was arrested, tried, and subsequently hanged for the deaths of the two women. His execution cemented his legacy as a symbol of youthful rebellion against British rule.
Meanwhile, in Patna, Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary led tributes to the seven martyrs of the Quit India Movement.
On August 11, 1942, during the movement, British forces killed seven people as they attempted to hoist the Indian tricolour near the Patna Secretariat, an event that continues to resonate deeply in Bihar’s collective memory.
