Bihar Police has launched a statewide crackdown on Bhojpuri songs with vulgar or double meanings, calling them a serious social problem. Authorities say these songs make women feel unsafe and have a bad influence on children. Strict action will be taken against anyone caught playing such songs in public.
A circular from the Police Headquarters has directed all senior officers, including Inspector Generals (IGs), Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs), and railway police, to take immediate action. A special campaign will be conducted to identify and penalize those promoting vulgar Bhojpuri songs in public places.
The circular explains why these songs are harmful. "Women feel embarrassed and uncomfortable when they hear such songs in public places, buses, trucks, and auto-rickshaws," it states. It also warns that such songs create an unsafe environment for women.
Anyone caught playing these songs in public will face legal action under relevant laws of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.
The issue has been discussed in the Bihar Assembly as well. Two years ago, Congress MLA Pratima Kumari raised concerns about the increasing promotion of vulgar Bhojpuri songs in films and social media. In response, the state government had promised strict action against those responsible.
With Holi celebrations approaching, police are expected to increase their efforts to enforce the ban.
