The Bihar government has sounded an alert as water levels of several rivers surged following incessant rainfall over the past few days.

Disaster Management Department (DMD) Additional Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit conducted a virtual review meeting with district officials to assess the situation across the state.

In a statement issued by the DMD, Amrit urged officials to remain vigilant and fully prepared to manage the situation if water levels continue to rise. Almost all rivers in the state are on an upward trend, inundating low-lying areas and posing a potential threat.

While officials from the Water Resources Department (WRD) have stated that there is "no alarming situation" yet, certain districts are facing critical conditions.

East Champaran, Gopalganj, and West Champaran are particularly affected, with rivers such as the Gandak and Burhi Gandak flowing above danger levels or nearing the threshold in some areas.

"There have been no casualties reported so far. In East and West Champaran, the local administration has relocated villagers from low-lying areas to safer places," an official said.

Continuous rain has caused significant increases in the water levels of major rivers, including the Gandak, Kosi, Ganga, Burhi Gandak, Mahananda, and Kamla. Rivers are also flowing above the danger mark in districts like Bagaha, Purnea, Supaul, Darbhanga, Khagaria, and Jhanjharpur.

Given the severity of the situation, authorities have lifted several gates at the Valmikinagar barrage on the Gandak River to manage the overflow.

This resulted in a rapid discharge of water, reaching a peak of 2.33 lakh cusec. Similarly, 1.73 lakh cusec of water was discharged from the Kosi Birpur barrage by 2 pm on Thursday.

The state government continues to monitor the situation closely, urging district administrations to stay alert and ensure the safety of residents in vulnerable areas.
