Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) founder Upendra Kushwaha was elected unopposed as the party's national president on Saturday. The RLM, a regional party from Bihar that was formed in 2023, is one of the key constituents of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The party has four MLAs in Bihar. While Kushwaha is a Rajya Sabha MP, his son Deepak Prakash, who is not a member of either the legislative council or the assembly, is a minister in the NDA government in Bihar.
In a statement, the RLM said that Kushwaha was "unanimously" elected as the RLM national president for a three-year term during a day-long convention of the party held at the Constitution Club.
"The national convention of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) concluded successfully today at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi. During the convention, the party's founder and senior leader, Upendra Kushwaha, was unanimously elected as the party's national president for 2026–29," the party said "Pramod Kumar Suman, appointed by the party as the national returning officer for the organisational polls, announced Kushwaha's election as the RLM president,” it added.
Addressing a press conference later, Kushwaha said it was the RLM's first organisational elections since it was formed in 2023.
"From the party's primary unit at panchayat levels to the state level (in Bihar), our office bearers have been elected as per our party's constitution. We also carried out a membership drive. With the conclusion of our national convention and election of the RLM’s national president, the process for organisational polls concluded today," the former Union minister said.
After the party was formed, all the office bearers were nominated, Kushwaha said.
"This is the first time the party's office bearers have been elected as per our party's constitution," he added.
