Bihar’s ‘Goldman’ puts passion on hold after Modi’s appeal

Indrajeet’s fascination with gold began in 2018 as a hobby but gradually evolved into a defining element of his identity.

Known locally as the “Goldman of Bihar,” 26-year-old Indrajeet Kumar — famed for his extravagant display of gold jewellery worth crores — has taken an unexpected step by halting his purchases of the precious metal, citing an appeal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A resident of Gaya’s Murarpur Kali Sthan Golbagicha locality, Indrajeet has built a striking public persona around gold, often seen adorned with nearly one kilogram of jewellery, including heavy chains, bracelets, rings on all ten fingers, and gold-studded watches. However, he now says he has paused both routine purchases and ambitious custom orders “in the interest of the nation.”

“I have been buying gold worth Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh every month for several years. But for the first time, I did not make any purchase in May. My last purchase was in April,” Indrajeet said, emphasising that he believes the Prime Minister’s appeals are made keeping national interest in mind.

Indrajeet’s fascination with gold began in 2018 as a hobby but gradually evolved into a defining element of his identity. “Now I feel incomplete without gold,” he admitted. His aspirations include owning a specially designed 1.5-kilogram gold shirt and adding gold-plated components to his Bullet motorcycle—plans that have now been put on hold.

Despite his flamboyant lifestyle, Indrajeet maintains that his investments are grounded in financial prudence. He runs a business dealing in old motorcycles, cars, and smartphones, channeling a significant portion of his earnings into gold. According to his family, all purchases are made through legitimate income, with regular payment of taxes and GST.

His father, Daljeet Kumar, recalled that the family was initially concerned about his safety due to the conspicuous display of wealth. “There was always a fear regarding his security, but over time we have become accustomed to it,” he said. Indrajeet, however, insists that he now moves freely without security and no longer feels unsafe.

Drawing inspiration from legendary singer Bappi Lahiri, widely known for his affinity for gold jewellery, Indrajeet says he aims to craft his own unique identity. He is also acquainted with Bihar’s earlier “Goldman,” Prem Singh, and aspires to surpass all predecessors.

Looking ahead, Indrajeet has set an ambitious target—to own between seven and eight kilograms of gold by 2030 and eventually wear up to 20 kilograms. For him, gold is more than a fashion statement; it is a long-term financial asset. “If there is ever a need for crores of rupees, gold will be my biggest strength,” he said.

Even as he temporarily distances himself from his passion, Indrajeet underscores the importance of disciplined saving. “Even small savings matter if done consistently. Saving money should become a habit,” he added.

For now, Bihar’s “Goldman” appears to be balancing personal ambition with what he views as a larger national responsibility.
