Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for rural road and bridge projects worth ₹8,837.77 crore under the state’s Rural Works Department (RWD).
The projects, aimed at enhancing rural connectivity, were launched during a virtual event held at the Chief Minister’s official residence, 1 Anne Marg. Kumar emphasised the importance of timely completion and regular maintenance of the projects, urging officials to prioritise quality and sustainability.
A statement from the Chief Minister's Office the event maintained, “With a view to improving rural connectivity, the CM on Friday virtually inaugurated and laid foundation stones of 6,199 projects of the RWD worth ₹8,837.77 crore.”
Highlighting the maintenance aspect, Kumar said, “All roads and bridges of the RWD, for which foundation stones were laid, must be completed on time. There should not be any compromise on the quality of works and materials. Roads and bridges inaugurated today should be inspected regularly, and their continuous maintenance must be given the top priority.”
The projects inaugurated include 763 roads spanning 947 km and four bridges with a combined length of 435 metres, constructed at a cost of ₹983 crore under the Chief Minister Gram Sampark Yojana.
Additionally, 972 roads totalling 1,904 km were repaired at ₹1,113 crore under the Chief Minister Rural Road Maintenance Programme, while 33 roads covering 104 km were upgraded at ₹92 crore under the Chief Minister Rural Road Development Scheme.
For projects whose foundation stones were laid, 1,472 roads (1,571 km) and five bridges (304 metres) are slated for construction under the Chief Minister Gram Sampark Scheme, with an estimated cost of ₹1,824 crore.
The Chief Minister Rural Road Maintenance Programme includes repairs to 2,306 roads (4,148 km) at ₹2,350 crore. Under the Mukhyamantri Gramin Sadak Unnayan Yojana, 442 roads (1,701 km) and one bridge (27 metres) will be upgraded at ₹1,739 crore.
The ceremony was attended by RWD Minister Ashok Choudhary, Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena, Additional Chief Secretary of RWD Dipak Kumar Singh, and other senior officials.
Kumar reiterated his commitment to improving rural connectivity to catalyse Bihar's development.
