Police in Bihar's Begusarai district have launched a high-level investigation on Thursday after a woman alleged that she was gang-raped and assaulted by five men, with officials awaiting medical and forensic reports to establish the circumstances of the case.

According to the woman's complaint, the incident occurred on the night of June 11 when she stepped out of her house. She alleged that five men overpowered her, dragged her to a secluded location and sexually assaulted her.

The woman further claimed that the accused tied her hands and legs and inflicted injuries on various parts of her body before abandoning her. Family members later took her to hospital, where she received treatment and was discharged the following day.

Police said the woman returned to the district hospital on June 17 after complaining of persistent pain. A fresh medical examination, including an ultrasound scan, was subsequently conducted.

Officials confirmed that certain objects were recovered during the course of medical treatment. However, police said the exact nature of the recovered materials and their relevance to the investigation would be determined after medical and forensic examinations are completed.

The woman alleged that despite informing police soon after the incident, no substantial action was initially taken. She also claimed that some of the accused had previously entered her residence and assaulted her during an earlier incident, for which a case had been registered.

Following the latest developments, senior police officers visited the hospital and recorded the woman's statement again.

Begusarai Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police Anand Kumar Pandey said the case was being investigated from all angles using scientific methods. He said the victim's allegations appeared credible at the present stage of the inquiry, while emphasising that conclusions would depend on evidence gathered during the investigation.

Police said the woman had named several suspects from her village. Raids are being conducted to trace the accused, though no arrests had been reported till Thursday evening.

Authorities are also examining records relating to the earlier case cited by the complainant.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police awaiting detailed medical and forensic reports before taking further action.
