Five-time former BJP MLA Dr. Rajiv Bindal was on Tuesday elected unopposed as the Himachal Pradesh BJP President, as no other leader filed nominations for the post. The announcement was made by Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
This marks Dr. Bindal's third term as state BJP chief — and his second consecutive term since 2020. He is now expected to lead the BJP into the 2027 Himachal Assembly elections.
An Ayurvedic doctor by profession, Dr. Bindal, 70, is known for his organisational skills and high energy in politics. He was first elected from the Solan Assembly constituency in a by-election in 2000 and went on to represent the seat three times. After Solan was reserved following delimitation, he shifted to Nahan, winning elections there in 2012 and 2017.
“I am thankful to the party leadership for giving me this opportunity to lead the BJP in Himachal Pradesh once again. I will live up to the expectations of the party and its workers, and will take the organization forward by working collectively with all leaders and workers,” Dr. Bindal said.
Originally considered a loyalist of former BJP Chief Minister PK Dhumal, Dr. Bindal is now perceived to be close to Union Health Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda. However, his relationship with former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur is believed to be strained, as he was reportedly sidelined during Thakur's tenure.
