Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday left for New Delhi, triggering fresh speculation over the possible restoration of a popular government in the state as President’s Rule approaches its expiry next month.
When approached by mediapersons on the purpose of his visit, Singh gave a brief response, saying the central government would take action “very soon”. President’s Rule in Manipur is due to expire in February, and political circles believe that a popular government could be reinstated without any further extension of central rule.
The developments come amid renewed political activity within the Bharatiya Janata Party. Last month, central BJP leaders summoned all party MLAs from Manipur to New Delhi, cutting across community lines. Almost all BJP legislators attended the meeting, a move that had fuelled expectations of government formation in the northeastern state.

Although there has been no official communication from the party or the Centre so far, Singh’s visit to the national capital has added momentum to speculation surrounding the future political roadmap for Manipur.
Observers note that the timing of the visit, just weeks before President’s Rule lapses, has assumed significance, particularly in the absence of any indication of an extension. However, BJP leaders have maintained silence on whether consultations are underway to revive an elected government.
