The BJP and its allies under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a decisive advantage in the Assam Assembly bypolls, winning two seats and maintaining leads in three others, according to the latest results.

The bypolls were conducted on 13 November in five constituencies that became vacant following the election of their sitting MLAs to the Lok Sabha earlier this year.

On Saturday, the BJP and its ally, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), won the Sidli (ST) and Behali assembly seats.

In Sidli, UPPL candidate Nirmal Kumar Brahma triumphed over Shuddho Kumar Basumatary of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) by a substantial margin of 37,016 votes.

Brahma received 95,243 votes, while Basumatary secured 58,227.

The Congress candidate, Sanjib Warie, garnered a mere 7,634 votes, finishing third.

The BJP retained the Behali seat through its candidate Diganta Ghatowal, who received 50,947 votes. His closest competitor, Congress’s Jayanta Borah, garnered 41,896 votes.

Other candidates in the fray, including Lakhikanta Kurmi of CPI(ML) Liberation and Ananta Gogoi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), lost their deposits.

Meanwhile, the NDA allies are leading in the three remaining constituencies.

In Dholai (SC), BJP’s Nihar Ranjan Das is ahead, while Diplu Ranjan Sarmah holds a commanding lead in Samaguri.

In Bongaigaon, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate Diptimayee Choudhury is poised to secure victory.

These bypolls were contested fiercely, with the BJP fielding candidates in three constituencies—Behali, Samaguri, and Dholai (SC)—and its allies UPPL and AGP nominating candidates in Sidli (ST) and Bongaigaon, respectively.

The Congress contested all five seats but failed to gain significant traction.

The Sidli seat was previously held by UPPL’s Jayanta Basumatary, who was elected to the Lok Sabha, while Behali was represented by Ranjit Dutta, now a Member of Parliament from the Tezpur parliamentary constituency.

This resounding performance further consolidates the NDA’s dominance in Assam, with its combined strategy effectively countering the opposition’s efforts.
