The Punjab BJP on Saturday appointed senior party leader and former Member of Parliament (MP) Avinash Rai Khanna as the party in-charge for the upcoming Ludhiana West assembly bypoll.
The decision comes as part of the BJP's strategy to strengthen its position in the state ahead of the crucial electoral contest.
In addition to Khanna’s appointment, the party also named former Union Minister Vijay Sampla as the co-incharge for the bypoll, according to an official statement. Both leaders bring extensive political experience and organisational skills, which the party hopes will bolster its chances in the constituency.
The Ludhiana West assembly seat fell vacant following the sudden demise of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January. Gogi, who had been representing the seat, tragically passed away after sustaining a fatal gunshot injury at his residence.
According to reports, the injury resulted from the accidental discharge of his licensed firearm, leading to his untimely death.
As of now, the Election Commission has not yet announced the schedule for the bypoll. However, political parties in the state have already begun strategising and mobilising their cadres in anticipation of the contest.
The BJP’s decision to appoint experienced leaders like Khanna and Sampla underscores its intent to make a strong push for the Ludhiana West seat, which has traditionally been a key battleground in Punjab politics.
