Launching a fresh offensive against the Hemant Soren-led government, Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand Babulal Marandi has raised concerns over the removal of 18 lakh women’s names from the list of beneficiaries under the Jharkhand Mukhyamantri Maiyan Samman Yojana (JMMSY).
Marandi pointed out that Hemant Soren had initially pledged to extend the benefits of JMMSY to around 56 lakh women, but is now providing it to only 38 lakh women.
Taking to social media platform X, Marandi urged the state government to stop offering excuses and ensure the disbursement of the scheme’s funds to all eligible women. He warned that if this demand is not met, the BJP will stage a statewide agitation in support of the women left out.
Marandi also questioned Chief Minister Hemant Soren directly, asking what wrongdoing the remaining 18 lakh women had committed to be excluded.
“Prior to the elections, Hemant Soren promised to provide financial support under the Maiyan Samman Yojana to 56 lakh women, but has limited it to only 38 lakh. Hemant ji, what offense have the other 18 lakh women committed?” Marandi wrote in his post.
He further stated that the government has withheld funds from these 18 lakh women, citing reasons such as ineligibility, technical issues, or other unspecified factors, and demanded an immediate resolution.
Additionally, Marandi criticised the disparity in financial assistance under the scheme, questioning why young women are being given Rs 2,500 while widows and elderly women receive only Rs 1,000 as pension.
He urged the government to revisit this decision, arguing that it discriminates against vulnerable and marginalized widows.

Meanwhile, irregularities have been uncovered during the ongoing physical verification of beneficiaries across the state, following allegations of large-scale fraud by computer operators involved in the registration process.
Subsequently, the names of ineligible beneficiaries are being removed from the list. There have also been previous complaints regarding fraudulent activities under the Maiyan Samman Yojana, with reports that funds were being credited to the bank accounts of wives and daughters of some government employees.
