BJP national president Nitin Nabin is set to start his three-day tour of Punjab with a visit to the Golden Temple in Amritsar on June 20, party officials confirmed on Thursday.

He will then visit the Durgiana Temple in Amritsar as he makes his first visit to poll-bound Punjab after taking charge as BJP president. After Amritsar, he is scheduled to travel to Jalandhar and Ludhiana and chair party meetings with BJP and RSS workers.

Nabin will also address a major event on June 21, where more than 7,500 party workers and leaders are expected to attend.

Party sources said the visit is particularly important as it is Nabin’s first visit to the state after taking charge and because Punjab is set to go for assembly polls either in late November this year or early February 2027.

The party has parted ways with the Shiromani Akali Dal and decided to contest alone this time without any alliance support.

The decision to begin the tour with visits to two of the holiest Sikh shrines is being seen as an attempt to reach out to the Sikh community and expand the party’s outreach beyond its traditional urban Hindu base.

It is pertinent to mention that Punjab, largely an agrarian state dependent on agricultural produce, holds immense significance in the country’s economy. The recent farmer protests had turned large sections of Punjab against the BJP, especially after several people lost their lives during the agitation.

BJP is now trying to reconcile with the people by appointing a Sikh leader as state party president and sending top leaders to the poll-bound state.
