The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday defended the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, stating that it was a necessary constitutional step and not an arbitrary decision.
During a debate on the Manipur budget and financial grants, BJP leader and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb explained that President’s Rule was imposed because an assembly session could not be held within the required time frame, as per constitutional rules.
Development in Northeast Under Modi Govt
Deb highlighted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the northeastern states, including Manipur, have seen major improvements in infrastructure over the past decade. He pointed out that rail and road connectivity, which had remained underdeveloped for years, has significantly advanced under the BJP government.
He further added that northeastern states are now gaining national recognition, unlike in the past when they were often overlooked.
AFSPA rollback and key policies
Deb also emphasised that 75% of areas in the northeast are no longer under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), marking an important step toward peace and stability in the region.
He listed several key achievements of the Modi government, including:
- Free health insurance to improve healthcare access.
- Regional languages introduced in MBBS courses, making medical education more inclusive.
- 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies, boosting women’s political participation.
Criticism of Congress and UPA government
Deb criticised the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, saying that despite Sonia Gandhi’s leadership, the Congress-led administration failed to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill—a law that was finally implemented under the Modi government.
