Jharkhand BJP unit president Babulal Marandi has demanded a CBI inquiry into an alleged scam that took place in the Asian Women's Hockey Championship held in Ranchi from 27 October to 5 November last year.
Raising questions on the expenditure of approximately Rs 1.4 crore on organising a gala dinner after the championship, Marandi said that the investigation committee set up by the State government is not trustworthy.
Marandi alleged that the people conducting the investigation are the same people who have been accused of the scam, and that it should be investigated by the CBI.
Notably, six teams including India participated in the Asian Women's Hockey Championship held in Ranchi in 2023.
After India won the title, a gala dinner was organised by the sports department of the State. It is being reported that Rs 1.04 crore was spent on the dinner.
Also, three sports directors cleared bills of 25 liters of diesel filled in e-rickshaws.
After media reports on the alleged scam, the Sports Director has formed an inquiry committee of 5 officials of the Directorate and SAJHA working under him. This team will review all the shortcomings/flaws and processes related to the organization of the game.
The allegations and investigation on the Sports Directorate will also be done by the Sports Director.
However, the BJP is smelling a big scam in the organisation of the event and has demanded a thorough enquiry into the allegations.
