On Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its second list of candidates, fielding Gamaliel Hembrom against Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) executive president and current Chief Minister Hemant Soren in the Barheit constituency.
The list also included Vikas Mahto, who will challenge JMM’s Mathura Mahto in the Tundi assembly constituency.
Gamaliel Hembrom, a former assistant teacher, left his job five years ago to enter politics. Known for his passion for sports, Hembrom has gained local recognition for organising large-scale football tournaments.
In the 2019 Assembly elections, he contested against Hemant Soren in Barheit on an AJSU Party ticket but placed fourth after losing by a wide margin.
In 2019, the BJP fielded Simon Malto against Hemant Soren, who also lost by a margin of over 25,000 votes.
With this latest list, the BJP has completed its candidate quota, fielding candidates in 68 seats as per the NDA’s seat-sharing arrangement. Previously, the BJP announced candidates for 66 seats.
Under the agreement, the AJSU Party will contest 10 seats, the JD(U) two seats, and the LJP one seat, while the BJP will contest 68 of the 81 seats in the Assembly.
