Haryana’s health system is in a shambles, laments former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, adding that it is the BJP government in-charge that is responsible for its declining state.
Holding the BJP responsible for ruining the health system of the state, Hooda pointed out the lack of establishment of any medical college, health institute, university or hospital in Haryana in the past 11 years. The government’s Ayushman Yojana scheme too has been rendered useless, he said.
“This government is not able to run its own Ayushman Yojana properly. Often, the government owes hundreds of crores of rupees to private hospitals. Due to this, private hospitals refuse to treat patients and patients' lives are at stake,” he said.
Hooda said the government had now excluded the treatment of five diseases – including operation for cataract, uterus, gall bladder, and treatment for vomiting, diarrhoea, and respiratory diseases – from the Ayushman Yojana.
“The Indian Medical Association has expressed surprise at the government’s decision. Instead of paying the private hospitals on time, the government has stopped providing treatment for the five most common diseases,” he said.
The Haryana Health Department is also lacking in its services by denying victims of road accidents free treatment, as per a scheme floated by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Hooda said. As a result, private hospitals have decided that they will no longer treat road accident victims, he added.
“Every year 5,000 people lose their lives in road accidents in the state, and more than 12,000 are seriously injured. The central ministry has made a provision to spend up to one and a half lakh rupees on the treatment of a person injured in a road accident. But, the Haryana Health Department has not yet made an agreement with private hospitals about this. This makes it clear that the BJP government’s policies do not have any kind of sympathy for the lives of common citizens,” he said.
Blaming the BJP for having “completely ruined the health system” in the state, Hooda said there are neither doctors nor facilities available.
Recalling the Congress’ governance in Haryana, Hooda recounted the opening of a health university, six medical colleges (in Karnal, Mewat, Khanpur, Mahendragarh, Bhiwani, Faridabad), AIIMS-2 and the National Cancer Institute in Badhsa.
Ten national super-specialty institutes were also approved in AIIMS-2, he added, besides the launch of 641 new rural hospitals, CPCs and PHCs.
BJP failed to provide even staff and facilities in these institutions, he protested.
