With farmer unions under the umbrella of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) deciding to go on a protest against the land pooling policy from Friday, the BJP has also joined the farmers in protesting against the government’s move.
The SKM had invited representatives of all political parties, including the BJP, to explain their stance on the land pooling policy, which they feel will make them landless.
While farmer unions are engaging themselves in protests organised by civil rights groups, BJP leaders have also started joining farmer leaders in their protest. Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar said that since the Congress had failed to play the role of Opposition, reluctantly protesting against land pooling, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) took up the matter only after the BJP did so, the farmers of Punjab had started looking to the BJP for support.
During the agitation against the land pooling policy in Ludhiana, organised under the aegis of the Zameen Bachao Sangharsh Committee, two BJP leaders, Gurdev Sharma Debi and Balkar Singh Sidhu, addressed farmers’ gatherings. There are many such examples.
