Tension prevailed in the Goghat area of West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Saturday morning after the body of BJP leader Sheikh Bakibulla was found hanging from the second-floor balcony of his residence. The incident has sparked political unrest, with both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) demanding a thorough investigation.
Bakibulla, who served as the mandal president of the BJP’s minority cell in Goghat, was reportedly discovered by his wife early in the morning. According to police sources, his hands were found tied in front—raising serious suspicions of foul play.
Local BJP MLA from Purshura, Biman Ghosh, visited the residence soon after the incident and alleged political motives behind the death.
“He was a well-known face in the area. This is clearly a political conspiracy,” Ghosh said, claiming the leader had been targeted for his rising influence among minority voters.

Following the discovery, the BJP called for a protest in front of the Goghat police station, accusing law enforcement of inaction. Tensions flared further when locals reportedly prevented police personnel from recovering the body, demanding immediate clarity on the circumstances surrounding the death.
The deceased leader’s family has also alleged political enmity, insisting Bakibulla was murdered and subsequently hanged to mislead investigators. A section of residents expressed discontent over what they described as a delayed police response.
While distancing itself from the political blame, the TMC also joined in calling for a fair and impartial investigation.
Police officials, however, have cautioned against drawing early conclusions.
“We are treating the case with the seriousness it deserves. The post-mortem will provide clarity,” a police officer said.
