The Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha stages a protest against the AAP government on Saturday.

The Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha on Saturday staged a protest against the AAP government, accusing it of failing to fulfil the election promise of giving Rs 1,000 every month to women.

Protesters headed by Mahila Morcha president Jai Inder Kaur tried to break police barricades to gherao the chief minister’s camp office, officials said.

However, their attempt was stopped by Chandigarh Police, who later detained them.

A large number of police personnel, including women officers, were stationed outside the Punjab BJP office to prevent the protesters from marching to the chief minister’s office.

Addressing the protesters, Kaur said that before the 2022 Assembly elections, AAP had promised Rs 1,000 to every woman in the state. She said not a single woman has received the promised amount, even though the AAP government is close to completing four years in power.

Kaur claimed that the state government now owes Rs 45,000 to every woman, adding that women feel “betrayed” and the government has committed a “fraud”.

Criticising the Bhagwant Mann government on rising crime, she said snatching incidents are happening “every day” and women do not feel safe. The protesters said AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had made the promise at a rally in Moga in November 2021, and the government must now honour it.

They held placards reading “kado milange har mahila nu” (when will every woman get it) and “jhoothian guarantees di sarkar” (a government of false guarantees).

When stopped from marching forward, the women sat on the road and shouted slogans against the Punjab government. Police later removed them, put them into a bus, and detained them.
