BJP MLA from Mandu constituency of Jharkhand, JP Patel today joined Congress at the party headquarters in Delhi on Wednesday.
Patel, an influential leader of the agrarian Kurmi community in Jharkhand, joined the party in the presence of Jharkhand Congress President Rajesh Thakur, Jharkhand Congress Legislature Party leader Alamgir Alam, State in-charge Ghulam Ahmed Mir and senior Congress leader Pawan Kheda.
Jharkhand Congress in-charge Ghulam Ahmed Mir got him membership of the party. Mir said that with JP Patel joining Congress, Congress will be strengthened in Jharkhand and its support base will increase further.
Jharkhand Congress President Rajesh Thakur said that JP Patel always used to say that between the one who sells the country and the one who saves the country, I have to stay with the one who saves the country. He is a strong leader. His father was also a strong leader. We will benefit from his coming to Congress.
After being expelled from Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 2019, Patel joined the BJP. However, just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he joined Congress for greener pastures.
Sources said that the Congress party, which is unable to find a Kurmi candidate for the Hazaribag constituency, roped in Patel to contest against BJP’s Manish Jaiswal. Hazaribag is a traditional BJP seat, from where former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha and his son Jayant Sinha had won elections.
