Actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Kharagpur (Sadar) Hiranmoy Chatterjee, popularly known as Hiran, has been booked by the police on charges of bigamy and domestic violence following a complaint filed by his first wife, Anindita Chatterjee. The case has been registered with Anandapur police station under several non-bailable sections.
According to police sources, Anindita alleged that Hiran married a second time despite her being alive and without obtaining a legal divorce. In her complaint, she claimed that the BJP legislator illegally married a second time. Along with allegations of bigamy, she accused Hiran of subjecting her to prolonged mental and physical abuse during their conjugal life.
The complaint states that Anindita was repeatedly insulted, threatened, and assaulted while she was living with him. Based on the seriousness of the allegations, the police registered a case under relevant sections related to domestic violence and other offences.
Confirming the development, a senior Kolkata Police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that an investigation has been initiated and the complainant’s statement has been recorded. “Necessary documents are being collected, and the role of the accused is being examined. Further legal action will be taken based on the progress of the investigation,” the official said.
Police sources added that investigators are in the process of collecting multiple signatures and documents and are questioning various individuals as part of efforts to verify the claims and establish the sequence of events.
The case has triggered considerable discussion in both political and entertainment circles, given Hiran Chatterjee’s prominence as a film actor and an elected representative. The allegations have added to the BJP’s political discomfort in the state.
As of now, no official statement or response has been issued by Hiran Chatterjee regarding the allegations.
