Uttarakhand BJP leader Asha Nautiyal has stirred controversy with her remarks advocating restrictions on the entry of non-Hindus to the Kedarnath temple. She claimed that certain non-Hindu individuals were attempting to harm the sanctity of the religious site.

Reacting to her statement, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat criticized BJP leaders for making sensational remarks. Nautiyal alleged that some non-Hindu elements were trying to damage the spiritual integrity of Kedarnath Dham.

When asked about reports of meat, fish, and alcohol being served in the area, she said such claims could only be verified through proper investigation. She further stated that if any individuals were engaging in activities that could tarnish the temple’s reputation, their entry should be banned.

According to Nautiyal, these were non-Hindus from outside the region who were deliberately trying to defame the temple. She mentioned that a recent meeting was convened by minister-in-charge Saurabh Bahuguna with local authorities and residents to discuss the issue.

During the meeting, concerns were raised about certain non-Hindu individuals allegedly trying to undermine Kedarnath’s reputation, leading to suggestions that such individuals should be identified and prohibited from entering the site.

In response, Congress leader Harish Rawat dismissed Nautiyal’s remarks, stating that BJP leaders frequently resort to religious rhetoric because they lack substantial achievements to present to the public. He emphasised that Uttarakhand, known as ‘Devbhoomi,’ should not be subjected to constant religious debates.

The controversy comes ahead of the Char Dham Yatra, which is set to begin on April 30, coinciding with Akshaya Tritiya, when the doors of Gangotri and Yamunotri Dhams will be opened. The portals of Kedarnath Dham are scheduled to open on May 2, followed by Badrinath Dham on May 4.
