Tensions soared in West Bengal’s political landscape after former BJP MP Arjun Singh called for a Nepal-style uprising in the state, prompting the ruling TMC to lodge FIRs against him. The ruling party accused Singh of attempting to incite violence and even threatening Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s life.
On the instructions of TMC MP Partha Bhowmik, FIRs have been filed against Singh at various police stations under the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate in North 24 Parganas district. Several municipal heads also alleged that Singh’s comments were aimed at creating unrest.
Singh, however, stood by his remarks. “The way the youth of Nepal roared against corruption is a great example. The corrupt government here should also be ousted by such a public uprising. The courage shown by Nepal’s youth should be shown by Bengal’s children too,” he said.
The controversy deepened further when TMC’s own MLA from Debra, Humayun Kabir, posted a social media message echoing similar sentiments. In his post, Kabir referred to the resignation of Nepal’s top leadership and military intervention there, writing, “When again? When again? Do you also dream like me? When will the same fate befall the dictators of our country? The masks of corrupt leaders will be unmasked through non-violent means.”

Kabir’s post has sparked debate over whether his remarks were directed at the central government led by the BJP or at the TMC state leadership itself. Political analysts suggest that while the word “dictator” was likely aimed at the Modi government, the opposition is now seizing on the issue to highlight corruption allegations against the TMC.
According to party sources, the TMC’s top leadership may caution Kabir, fearing his comments could provide ammunition to rivals. However, no official action has been taken against him yet, in contrast to the swift FIRs lodged against Singh.
