Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma hands out a job appointment letter to a newly recruited teacher at a public event in Guwahati. Permanent appointment letters were handed over to 23,956 other contractual and state pool teachers in the event.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday claimed that his government has provided over one lakh jobs since it came to power in May 2021, a feat he says no government in India has achieved since Independence.

Speaking at an event to distribute permanent appointment letters to 23,956 contractual and state pool teachers, Sarma said, “Prior to today's appointments, we have given jobs to 1,00,389 youths, which fulfilled our promise of providing one lakh jobs. If we consider today's appointments, there will be 1,24,345 jobs till now since May 2021.”

The Chief Minister asserted that his government has surpassed the record of any administration over the past 78 years, adding, "In 78 years of Independence, no government could give one lakh appointments at one time. Our government has crossed that golden phase and we hope to achieve more such milestones in future."

Sarma further announced that an additional 50,000 appointments would be made by next year in sectors such as education and police. He also revealed that all new appointees would join the National Pension System (NPS), which is set to transition to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) in April 2025.

Referring to his stint as Education Minister in 2012, Sarma recalled, “When I as the education minister had first appointed TET teachers in 2012, I did not have the political support and my own government criticised me. We fought and disposed of over 500 court cases."

He added that the Education Department will soon approve 6,000 headmaster positions across schools.

The BJP-led Assam government had initially promised to provide one lakh jobs annually during its 2021 assembly poll campaign but later clarified that this figure was for the entire five-year tenure.
