Three-time MLA from Gharaunda, Harvinder Kalyan, was unanimously elected Speaker of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha on Friday along with his deputy Krishan Middha.

Kalyan represents the OBC Rod community in Gharaunda segment of Karnal district in the state.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini moved the proposal in the assembly for Kalyan, which was backed by Haryana minister Ranbir Gagwa.

Pro-tem Speaker Rabhuvir Kadian declared Kalyan Speaker as there was no other candidate in the fray.

Earlier, cabinet minister Krishan Lal Panwar pushed for Middha’s name and BJP MLA Ghanshayam Dass seconded it.

Middha is one of the eight Punjabi-Khatri lawmakers elected to the assembly. His appointment means more representation for Jind.

CM Saini congratulated Kalyan as he assumed charge. He was congratulated by former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, INLD MLAs Aditya Devi Lal and Arjun Chautala, among others.

Earlier today, Saini and other newly elected MLAs took oath as members of the House of the 15th state assembly.
