Eyeing next year’s Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to intensify its organisational activities across West Bengal, focusing on outreach to refugees under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), said a party leader.
The saffron camp has begun large-scale preparations to facilitate the citizenship process for Hindu refugees, particularly those who faced religious persecution in Bangladesh, aiming to strengthen its connection with grassroots communities.
“We have planned to set up around 700 CAA assistance camps across the state in the coming weeks. These camps will provide detailed information about the CAA, guidance on eligibility and hands-on support in filling out citizenship applications. Party workers will also help applicants gather necessary documents and offer technical assistance,” said the leader.
Several key meetings were held across the state on Tuesday to finalise strategies for the initiative. The meetings focused on camp management, including site selection, volunteer recruitment, coordination with local administration and addressing common challenges faced during the citizenship application process — such as lack of documents or delays in verification.
Party insiders said that discussions also included ways to publicise the Centre’s welfare schemes in Bengal and highlight their progress to strengthen BJP’s image before the polls.
BJP’s national general secretary BL Santosh attended the main meeting in person, while senior leader Sunil Bansal joined virtually. State president Samik Bhattacharya, along with district and block-level leaders, participated in the strategy sessions organised in multiple groups.
The principal meeting, which began at 2 pm, marked the start of what party sources describe as a “massive public connect drive” aimed at ensuring refugees’ participation in the CAA process and bolstering BJP’s ground presence ahead of the elections.
