Hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address a public rally in Haldia on Thursday, the recovery of a BJP worker’s body from the banks of the Haldi River has triggered a major political controversy in the region.
The deceased has been identified as Mahadev Biswas, a resident of Banskhana Jalpai village under Bhabanipur Police Station in Purba Medinipur district. According to family members, Biswas had been missing since Tuesday afternoon after he left home and failed to return.
On Wednesday evening, locals spotted his body lying on the riverbank and alerted the police. Officers reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it to Haldia Sub-divisional Hospital for post-mortem examination.
BJP has alleged that Biswas was murdered by miscreants allegedly backed by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Party leaders claimed that the victim was actively involved in preparations for the Prime Minister’s rally, including putting up flags and festoons in the area.
BJP leader Biswanath Banerjee said that Biswas had been working for the party ahead of the rally and went missing soon after. The party has termed the death “suspicious” and demanded a thorough investigation.
However, the TMC has strongly denied the allegations. Tilak Kumar Chakraborty, the party’s candidate for the Mahishadal Assembly constituency, stated that while the incident is tragic, the BJP is attempting to politicise the death. He added that those responsible should be identified and punished.
Meanwhile, the Officer-in-Charge of Bhabanipur Police Station said no formal complaint alleging murder has been filed by the victim’s family so far. “A case of unnatural death has been registered, and an investigation is underway,” the officer said.
