Six workers were tragically burnt alive and several others injured after a major fire broke out at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh’s Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district on Wednesday.
The devastating fire and subsequent huge blast occurred at the Lakshmi Ganapathi Fireworks unit in Komaripalem village, Rayavaram mandal, during the afternoon. Police confirmed that the shed of the unit collapsed under the force of the explosion. Six workers died immediately and eight others sustained injuries. Two of the injured were admitted to a hospital in Anaparthy in a critical condition, while the remainder were rushed to private facilities.
There were approximately 15 workers in the unit, and officials fear that more individuals may be buried under the rubble. Police and fire services personnel are working on the rescue operation, although fire services faced considerable difficulty controlling the blaze due to the rapid spread caused by the presence of chemical material. Senior police, revenue, and fire department officials have since rushed to the site to monitor the situation.
Authorities are of the view that the accident may have occurred due to non-compliance with essential safety standards within the unit. The police have registered a case and formal investigation into the incident is underway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the loss of six lives. He also prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. In a post on X, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) wrote, "The loss of lives due to a mishap in Konaseema district, Andhra Pradesh, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured."
