The counting of votes for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections underway will start at 10 am on January 16, said civic commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, on Thursday.

BMC and 28 other municipal corporations in Maharashtra went to polls on January 15, although the voter turnout in the first two hours of voting was rather dismal at 6.98 per cent for the BMC elections.

Gagrani said that due to the short gap between polling and counting, the counting of votes for all civic wards will start at 10 am on Friday, which might lead to results being declared later than usual.

“It may take an hour longer than usual,” he said.

Polling began at 7.30 am amid tight security arrangements across Mumbai and will continue till 5.30 pm on Thursday.

The average voter turnout stood at 6.98 per cent till 9.30 am, a BMC spokesperson said, citing data by the civic body.

The highest turnout of 11.57 per cent was recorded in ward number 18 in the western suburbs, while the lowest turnout of 1.68 per cent was reported in ward number 162 in the eastern suburbs till 9.30 am.
