A tragic industrial accident claimed one life and left 11 others injured on Monday night after a boiler exploded at a sponge iron factory in the Palitpur area under Dewandighi police station in East Burdwan district.
The deceased has been identified as Aamir Khan, 26, a truck driver who was present at the site during the explosion. The impact of the blast caused a part of the factory ceiling to collapse, killing Khan instantly. The injured workers were rushed to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
The explosion occurred during the melting process inside the factory’s furnace, which uses iron scraps to produce iron rods. According to factory sources, the factory houses four to five kilns used for this purpose.
Local authorities responded swiftly to the incident. Police personnel from the Burdwan police station arrived at the scene shortly after receiving information. Additional Superintendent of Police Arka Banerjee also visited the factory to oversee the investigation.
Banerjee confirmed that a boiler explosion had taken place and said, “The police are conducting a preliminary investigation to determine whether the cause was mechanical failure or something else.” Company employee Dharambir Yadav said, “The company’s furnace exploded and 11 people were severely burned. All of them have been admitted to the hospital.”
Anup Dutta, the factory’s security manager, added, “The explosion was sudden. A truck driver was killed on the spot when the ceiling collapsed. The injured workers are from Purulia district and states like Bihar and Chhattisgarh.”
Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the exact cause of the explosion and assess any potential safety lapses.
