Manipur's fight against drug trafficking took an unusual turn this week after a routine check uncovered a creative smuggling attempt.
Acting on a tip or during standard procedures, a team from the 39th Assam Rifles and Jiribam Police Station intercepted a Bolero pickup truck.
The white vehicle, registered under number AS 11DC-3506, was travelling from Tipaimukh in Pherzawl district towards Cachar, Assam. A thorough inspection revealed a more sinister cargo hidden within its seemingly innocuous contents.
Alert officers discovered a devious method of concealment. 30 soap capsules, containing a total of approximately 363.45 grams (excluding the capsule weight) of suspected brown sugar, were cleverly hidden inside pumpkins carried by the truck.
The two individuals associated with the vehicle, Abdul Mannan Mazumder and Khalil Ulla Barbhuiya, were promptly apprehended. They now face investigation and legal proceedings overseen by the Jiribam Police Station.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh took to social media to commend the vigilance of the Assam Rifles and Jiribam Police. He lauded their success in stemming the flow of illegal drugs and emphasized the significance of collaboration in safeguarding communities from the perils of drug trafficking.
This seizure serves as a stark reminder of the evolving tactics employed by smugglers.
