Security forces on Monday foiled a major narcotics smuggling attempt from across the International Border (IB) in Jammu, officials said.
The recoveries include two bags dropped by a Pakistani drone containing more than 5 kg of heroin worth over Rs 25 crore in the international market, they said.
The recovery was made near the Border Outpost Jatinder in the RS Pura sector during a joint search operation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and police.
The search operation was launched at around 6 am after a Pakistani drone was seen hovering over the Indian side. During the search operation, two bags containing 10 packets of heroin weighing 5.3 kg were recovered. The operation was still underway when the last reports were received.
Officials said the recovery of such a massive quantity of heroin thwarted not only a major smuggling attempt from Pakistan but also prevented these drugs from reaching handlers inside the Union Territory (UT).
Police have taken cognisance of the matter and launched an investigation to trace out possible handlers and agents who could have picked up these drugs for transporting deep into the region.
Besides destroying lives, the earnings from these drugs could have been used by terrorists operating in the region for the sale and exchange of food and other essential commodities required for their survival, as winter is starting to set in the UT.
Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir have intensified their operations against the terrorists and their infrastructure, destroying financial structures, especially in the Kashmir Valley.
