Tension gripped the Paharghati area of Dhulian in Murshidabad district late Saturday night after a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was allegedly shot dead by a fellow jawan following a heated altercation. The deceased has been identified as Ratan Singh.
According to sources, the incident took place around 10:30 PM while both jawans were on duty. An argument reportedly broke out between the two over an undisclosed issue, which soon turned violent. In a shocking turn of events, a jawan identified as Mishra allegedly opened fire on Ratan Singh, critically injuring him.
Singh was immediately rushed to the local Anupnagar Hospital with bullet wounds. Following the incident, a large contingent of police personnel from Shamsherganj police station reached the scene. Due to the critical condition of the injured jawan, he was referred to the Jangipur Sub-District Hospital. However, doctors at the facility declared him brought dead. Preliminary reports suggest that Singh may have succumbed to his injuries en route.
The accused jawan, Mishra, has since been taken into custody.
While there has been no official statement from the BSF regarding the incident, Jangipur Police District Superintendent Amit Kumar Sau confirmed the fatal shooting. saying, “I have heard that a BSF jawan died after being shot during a dispute with a colleague. The matter is currently under investigation.”
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the ranks of the BSF and the local community, raising serious concerns over discipline and internal conflict within the force. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the dispute and the sequence of events that led to the fatal shooting.
