Tension gripped the Seemanagar area under Chapra police station in Nadia district on Tuesday night following a clash between Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and the state police over the seizure of cough syrup Phensedyl which is banned in Bangladesh. At least three policemen were reportedly injured in the fisticuff.

According to sources, the incident occurred around 9 pm when local residents noticed several packets being unloaded from a vehicle and, upon inspection, found them filled with bottles of Phensedyl, suspected to be brought for smuggling to Bangladesh.

“The residents promptly informed the Chapra police, who reached the spot and began confiscating the contraband. However, the situation escalated when BSF jawans from Seemanagar’s 32 Battalion arrived and demanded that the seized items be handed over to them, claiming they had prior intelligence about the smuggling operation. The police reportedly refused, citing legal procedure, which led to a heated argument that soon turned violent,” said an officer of Chapra police station.

Additional forces from both sides arrived at the scene as the situation spiraled out of control. The injured policemen were rushed to Chapra Hospital for treatment.

Following the clash, the police reportedly arrested a BSF personnel. Senior officers from both the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier and the Krishnanagar Police District later reached the spot to assess the situation and restore order.

The BSF maintains that their operation was based on intelligence inputs regarding large-scale Phensedyl smuggling to Bangladesh through the Chapra border area. The police, however, allege that the BSF attempted to take custody of the seized goods unlawfully after the police had conducted the raid following proper legal procedures.

As of now, neither the DIG of BSF’s South Bengal Frontier nor the Superintendent of Police, Krishnanagar Police District, has issued an official statement on the incident.

The confrontation has sparked fresh concerns about coordination and jurisdictional friction between central and state law enforcement agencies in border regions of West Bengal.
