Former Indian cricket captain, Sourav Ganguly fondly remembered Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the former West Bengal Chief Minister who passed away on Thursday morning, as a true cricket enthusiast.
On his arrival at the N S C Bose International Airport in Kolkata from Mumbai on Friday, Ganguly shared his memories of the late leader, highlighting his deep love for the game.
“Buddha babu was crazy about cricket. He would talk to me before and after matches, discussing our performances with keen interest. He had an exceptional understanding of the game and knew the rules inside out,” Ganguly said.
The former skipper added that Bhattacharjee was not just interested in contemporary cricket but also enjoyed reminiscing about former greats like Pankaj Roy, often discussing his captaincy and batting prowess.
Ganguly also reflected on Bhattacharjee's presence at the state-organized felicitation event after the 2003 World Cup, where India finished as runners-up. “It was always a pleasure to meet him. He loved discussing cricket, films, and books.
But despite our many conversations, he never once brought up politics,” Ganguly recalled, emphasising the former Chief Minister’s warm and approachable nature.
Ganguly's tribute paints a picture of Bhattacharjee as a man of diverse interests, whose passion for cricket left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
