A total of 30 Buddhist monks, in a unique display of cultural coexistence, are on their way to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
The monks, accompanied by two officials from Sikkim’s Ecclesiastical Department, have embarked on a sacred journey from the Himalayan state to participate in one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
Flagged off by Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang from Gangtok on Saturday, the delegation aims to foster spiritual ties between Buddhism and Hinduism, showcasing Sikkim’s rich religious and cultural heritage on a national platform.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Tamang emphasised the significance of interfaith dialogue.
“It was an honour to flag off a distinguished delegation of Buddhist monks from our state to the sacred Prayagraj Mahakumbh Mela 2025, this morning from the capital. This significant gesture reflects the deep spiritual and cultural ties that unite our diverse traditions,” he said.
Tamang added that the pilgrimage highlights Sikkim’s commitment to promoting peace, harmony, and cultural exchanges.

"The delegation, comprising 30 revered monks and two officials from the Ecclesiastical Department, will continue their pilgrimage tour till February 7. I extend my heartfelt wishes for a spiritually fulfilling and meaningful experience as they represent the rich heritage of Sikkim on this sacred occasion," the Chief Minister stated.
The Mahakumbh Mela, held every 12 years in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, is renowned for drawing millions of devotees, saints, and scholars from across the globe. It is a vibrant confluence of religious discourse, spiritual activities, and cultural exchange.
The participation of Sikkim’s Buddhist monks underscores the state's dedication to fostering mutual respect among different faiths.
Officials from the Ecclesiastical Department expressed gratitude for the Chief Minister’s support in facilitating the delegation's participation.
“This initiative aligns with Sikkim’s broader vision of promoting religious tourism and cultural diplomacy on national and international platforms,” an official remarked.
During the pilgrimage, the monks—hailing from various monasteries across Sikkim—will participate in religious discussions, prayer ceremonies, and scholarly interactions at the Mahakumbh Mela.
Their engagement is expected to enhance awareness of Buddhism’s contributions to India’s diverse spiritual landscape.
The delegation is scheduled to return to Sikkim on February 7 after completing their engagements at the Mahakumbh Mela, marking a significant chapter in Sikkim’s efforts to preserve and promote its spiritual heritage beyond its borders.
