The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) on Friday announced that it has reached a significant milestone, becoming ‘the first water utility’ in India to secure the internationally recognised ISO 50001:2018 certification.
In a statement, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board said the certification, granted on April 14 by Bureau Veritas, acknowledges the strength and effectiveness of its energy management systems.
The recognition specifically covers BWSSB’s operation and maintenance of bulk water supply pumping stations at three major locations—TK Halli, Harohalli and Tataguni—confirming that they meet global standards.
It also includes key support functions carried out at the head office in Cauvery Bhavan, along with the uninterrupted supply of water across the Greater Bengaluru region.

Earlier in the day, BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar, accompanied by senior officials, met Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and formally handed over the certificate, expressing appreciation for his guidance and support.
Praising the accomplishment, Shivakumar said, “Securing the prestigious ISO 50001:2018 certification marks an important achievement and reflects the government’s commitment to developing a world-class and sustainable water infrastructure for Bengaluru.” He added, “Through efficient management of large-scale bulk water supply systems, BWSSB is establishing a national benchmark while ensuring dependable and continuous water services to millions.
This achievement further strengthens our vision of transforming Bengaluru into a future-ready, climate-resilient global metropolis.”
Last year, BWSSB had also become ‘the first water board’ in the country to receive certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for its piped drinking water supply management system.
