Train speeds on a newly inaugurated stretch of the Delhi Metro were restricted on Thursday after more than 500 metres of signalling cables were stolen, affecting operations between Deepali Chowk and Majlis Park.
According to officials, the theft occurred in the section between Bhalaswa and Majlis Park stations, forcing trains to run at a reduced speed of 25 kmph as a safety precaution.
The affected corridor forms part of the Magenta Line operations in the area connecting Deepali Chowk and Majlis Park. The disruption came just days after the stretch was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On Sunday, Modi had inaugurated the Majlis Park to Maujpur-Babarpur section of the Pink Line as well as the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park stretch, expanding the city’s metro network and improving connectivity in north Delhi.

Officials said the signalling system in the affected section was compromised after thieves removed over 500 metres of critical cables used for train communication and signalling. The damage required trains to operate under restricted speed conditions to ensure passenger safety.
As a result, trains between Bhalaswa and Majlis Park were slowed to 25 kmph, significantly lower than the normal operational speed of metro services.
A senior official said that repair work to reinstall the signalling cables cannot be carried out during revenue hours as it would require suspending train operations and could cause major inconvenience to commuters.
“To minimise disruption to passenger services, restoration work will be carried out during night hours after the completion of daily metro operations,” the official said.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said regular announcements were made at stations and inside trains to inform passengers about the temporary operational changes.
Passengers travelling along the affected corridor were advised about the slower train movement through station announcements and onboard communication systems.
