Can Congress turn the tide in BJP's stronghold Karnal?

Karnal constituency is a general seat, dominated by the urban population. While many smaller villages surround the district. In the 2019 election, Manohar Lal Khattar turned victorious with the BJP party securing 79,906 votes, defeating Congress' Tarlochan Singh by 45,188 votes. Jat population dominates the district combining with Muslims and Sikhs.

The Karnal Assembly constituency in Haryana is set to vote on October 5, 2024, with vote counting on October 8. Karnal, one of the 90 assembly seats in Haryana, is a general seat and falls under the Karnal district and Lok Sabha constituency.

 

Jagmohan Anand has been announced as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate, while Congress has fielded Sumita Virk, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has placed Sunil Bindal, while regional but impactful parties like Haryana Lokhit Party, and Jannayak Janta Party, are yet to announce their candidates.

 

In the 2019 assembly elections, BJP's Manohar Lal Khattar secured victory with 79,906 votes, securing 63.72 pc of the vote share, a 4.97pc increase from the previous election, defeating Congress leader Tarlochan Singh by 45,188 votes. Singh got 34,718 votes (27.68pc), showing an 18.56pc rise for the party. 

 

Khattar won from the seat twice, and later CM Nayab Singh Saini also won from the Karnal seat, showcasing BJP's stronghold in the region. 

 

What lies ahead as an interesting angle is how will Congress compete in Karnal. 

 

The Jannayak Janta Party’s (JJP) Tej Bahadur finished third with 3,192 votes (2.55pc), while AAP’s Mahinder Pal Rathi managed 1,402 votes (1.12pc). 

 

The margin of victory decreased to 45,188 votes (36.03pc).

 

Khattar also won the 2014 election, garnering 82,485 votes (58.75pc) and defeating Independent candidate Jai Parkash Gupta by a significant margin of 63,773 votes. Parkash secured 18,712 votes (13.33pc).

 

Karnal has both rural and urban areas. Karnal is predominantly urban, while many smaller villages surround the district. 
 
Congress leader Surender Narwal received 12,804 votes (9.12 pc), a 26.31 pc drop from the previous election. 

 

The victory margin in 2014 was higher at 63,773 votes (45.42 pc).

 

The voter turnout in 2019 decreased to 52.37pc from 67.84pc in 2014, while the number of registered electors rose from 2, 06,972 in 2014 to 2,39,477 in 2019. The 2019 polls saw 1.56 pc of NOTA votes.
