Five persons died after the vehicle they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge at Lahar on National Highway 154A near Dalhousie in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh.
The accident reportedly took place around midnight. Initial reports suggest that the driver lost control of the car, which then skidded off the road and plunged into the gorge.
All five people travelling in the vehicle are feared to have died in the accident. After being alerted, police and rescue teams reached the spot and began the rescue operation. The difficult terrain and poor visibility due to darkness made it hard for the teams to reach the wrecked vehicle. Locals also helped the police and rescuers in the operation.
Police said the exact reason behind the mishap is still being investigated. Preliminary findings suggest that the driver may have lost control of the car, causing it to leave the highway and fall into the gorge.
Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Saklani said police and rescue teams were sent to the site soon after the accident was reported. He said the rescue operation continued throughout the night. Authorities are now working to identify the deceased and complete the required legal procedures.
Further information about the victims is awaited. The SP urged people to drive carefully on hilly roads, especially at night and during bad weather. Heavy rain in the region has made roads slippery and increased the chances of accidents. Police have registered a case and started an inquiry into the incident.
