In a tragic accident near Himachal Pradesh's Rohtang Pass on Sunday, four people lost their lives and one person was seriously injured after their car skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge near Rahninala in Kullu district.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Manali, KD Sharma, confirmed that the vehicle was carrying five passengers when it veered off the mountain road amid heavy rainfall. Rescue teams were rushed to the site, and one critically injured person was pulled out and taken to a hospital. The identities of the victims are yet to be confirmed.
CM Sukhu expresses grief over Rohtang road accident
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed sorrow over the accident, calling it “heart-wrenching.” In a message on X, he said, “May God grant peace to the departed souls and strength to the grieving families. I have directed the local administration to ensure the injured person receives proper medical care. Wishing a speedy recovery.”
Heavy and persistent rain across Himachal Pradesh has severely disrupted road access, especially in the Kullu district, where 39 roads remain blocked in areas like Banjar and Nirmand, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
This incident comes just days after another fatal accident near Jalog in Shimla, in which three people lost their lives. With the monsoon continuing to wreak havoc, the state’s death toll has crossed 70, including both rain-related and road accident fatalities.
The authorities have issued advisories urging locals as well as tourists to avoid non-essential travel, especially in areas prone to landslides. A 24x7 emergency helpline (1070) remains active for those needing assistance.
