The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made its presence felt in Bongaon, North 24 Parganas district, on Monday, delving deeper into the investigation surrounding the assault on an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team earlier this year.
A team of CBI officials visited the residence of TMC leader Shankar Adhya, accompanied by forensic science personnel.
The ED team came under attack on January 5 while attempting to arrest Adhya, the former chairman of the Bongaon Municipality, in connection with an alleged ration scam.
The mob, reportedly aiming to impede the arrest, hurled stones at the ED vehicles, forcing CRPF personnel to resort to baton charges.
CBI officers deployed 3D scanners to meticulously map Adhya's residence and surrounding areas.
Additionally, they meticulously videographed the neighbourhood and served a notice to Adhya's family, demanding CCTV footage captured on January 5th.
The investigation further extended to the residence of Gopal Seth, the current Bongaon Municipality chairman.
CBI officials sought CCTV footage encompassing the Simultala area, where Adhya resides, for the first week of January. Seth confirmed to the CBI that the footage is retained for a period of 25 days.
Meanwhile, in Kolkata, Jiauddin Molla, a close associate of Shajahan Seikh, appeared before the CBI for questioning regarding a separate attack on an ED team that transpired on the same day in Sandeshkhali.
Molla assured reporters of his full cooperation with the investigation. The CBI is probing Molla's potential involvement in the mob attack that targeted the ED team during their search of Sheikh's residence, also linked to the alleged ration scam.
Sheikh, another TMC leader, remained absconding for 55 days following the attack before being apprehended on February 29th amidst violent protests spearheaded by women who accused him of sexual assault and land grabbing.
The CBI's intensified investigation signals their determination to unearth the details behind the attacks on ED teams and hold those responsible accountable.
