The CBI revealed that the bribe was allegedly meant to help the college secure NMC approval despite not meeting the required standards.

In a major crackdown on corruption in the medical education sector, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday arrested Tapan Kumar Jana, a senior faculty member at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, on charges of accepting bribes in exchange for issuing fraudulent assessment reports.

Jana, a resident of Burdwan and the head of the Anatomy Department at Murshidabad Medical College, also served as an assessor for the National Medical Council (NMC). According to CBI sources, he was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹10 lakh to issue a fake compliance report for a private medical college based in Belagavi, Karnataka.

The CBI revealed that the bribe was allegedly meant to help the college secure NMC approval despite not meeting the required standards. Acting on credible information, the central agency laid a trap to catch the accused in the act. Jana was arrested at the scene, marking a key breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into corrupt practices in medical college accreditations.

Following his arrest, the CBI launched extensive search operations across multiple locations, including Burdwan, Kolkata and Belagavi. A team of eight CBI officers conducted an overnight raid on Saturday from 11:00 pm Saturday to 7:30 am Sunday in the Hatishal area of Mithapukur, Burdwan. Though Jana was not at home during the search, his wife, also a medical professional, was present.

The operation led to the seizure of a total of ₹54.60 lakh in cash— ₹10 lakh being the bribe amount and an additional ₹44.60 lakh recovered during the searches. Investigators also seized several incriminating documents, which are now being examined for further leads.

A formal case has been registered against Jana, officials of the private medical college in Karnataka and three other individuals allegedly involved in the bribery conspiracy.

“The accused was caught accepting illegal gratification for manipulating NMC inspection reports— a serious threat to the integrity of medical education,” said a senior CBI official.

The investigation is ongoing and more arrests could follow as the agency uncovers deeper links between assessors and private institutions accused of bypassing regulatory norms through bribery.
