Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Deputy Chief Signal and Telecommunication Engineer of the Chakradharpur Division of South Eastern Railway in Jharkhand while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh. Two representatives of Kolkata-based private firm M/s MRT Signals Limited have also been arrested in connection with the case.
According to the CBI, the accused railway official had allegedly demanded illegal gratification from the company in exchange for approving a contract variation file and a price variation clause related to signal and telecommunication works being executed in the Chakradharpur Division.
The agency alleged that the approvals were intended to provide undue financial benefits to the private firm.
The CBI registered a case on July 24 after receiving a complaint and launched an investigation into the allegations. During the probe, investigators reportedly found that the accused officer had already accepted Rs 5 lakh from the company in May 2026 for clearing the file.
To receive the remaining bribe amount, the railway official allegedly arrived at Howrah railway station, where the CBI laid a trap and caught him red-handed while accepting Rs 4 lakh in cash from the company's representatives. The entire bribe amount was recovered from the spot.
Following the arrests, CBI teams carried out simultaneous searches at the residential and official premises of the accused and other suspects across Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal.
The agency said several incriminating documents and digital evidence were recovered and seized during the raids.
Describing the operation as a significant anti-corruption action, the CBI said it was one of the first major trap cases in recent years in the West Bengal region in which a public servant was caught red-handed accepting a bribe.
