A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided the Vigilance Office in Punjab’s Mohali late on Monday in connection with the ongoing bribery case involving suspended DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar.
During the raid, investigators arrested a leader (personal assistant) of a senior officer for his alleged involvement in the corruption case.
While there was no official confirmation from the CBI or the Vigilance Bureau, Akali Dal leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia claimed on X that the central agency “recovered Rs 13 lakh from a vigilance official in a Rs 20 lakh bribery scandal".
Suspended DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, a 2009-batch IPS officer, was arrested by the CBI in October last year in a high-profile bribery and corruption case.
The case against him stemmed from allegations that he and his close aide Krishanu Sharda had demanded Rs 8 lakh from a scrap dealer.
The money was allegedly sought to settle an FIR registered against the complainant at Sirhind police station and to allow him to run his business without any hindrance.
After a complaint was filed, the CBI court in March took cognisance of the matter, noting that electronic evidence, witness statements, and a controlled call between Sharda and Bhullar established criminal conspiracy.
Besides, a separate case of amassing disproportionate assets was also registered against both by the two leading financial crime investigation agencies.
