In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted raids at the residence and office of suspended TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh in Sandeshkhali.
The operation was part of the ongoing probe into an attack on an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team in the area.
According to officials, the CBI sleuths thoroughly searched Sheikh's residence in the Akunchipara locality of Sarberia, collecting crucial evidence related to the assault.
Subsequently, the investigative team proceeded to his office and the residence of a close aide for further examination.
The CBI, in a statement, disclosed that several incriminating documents and material exhibits were seized during the raids.
Sheikh, who stands suspended from the ruling Trinamool Congress, was arrested in connection with a mob attack on ED officials in Sandeshkhali on January 5.
The attack occurred when the ED team had gone to conduct searches at Sheikh's premises regarding an alleged ration distribution scam.
The operation involved a 14-member team, including CBI sleuths, central forensic officials, and injured ED officials.
To ensure safety, a significant deployment of central forces was observed in the area during the investigative process.
The CBI officials proceeded to unseal Sheikh's home, previously sealed by the ED, to facilitate their examination.
The forensic team meticulously combed through the premises, spending considerable time collecting evidence.
In response to the incident, TMC's Sandeshkhali MLA Sukumar Mahata revealed that despite seeking assistance from Sheikh to control the mob, he claimed to be absent from the area.
Following Sheikh's custody, the CBI revisited his residence and office in Sandeshkhali, though both premises were found locked during the inspection.
Nevertheless, the investigative team extensively documented the sites from outside before concluding their operation.
