The CBI has started a probe after registering a case into the alleged paper leak of the Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UKSSSC) graduate-level exam held in September, officials stated this on Tuesday.

Uttarakhand Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) V. Murugesan said the state police have handed over all reports and documents related to the case to the CBI for further probe.

The paper leak took place during the exam held on September 21 for recruitment to various government departments. Three pages of a question paper were leaked from a centre in Haridwar, creating chaos across the state.

Angry over the leak, unemployed youth under the banner of the Uttarakhand Unemployed Association staged massive protests. Following their agitation, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami accepted their demand and recommended a CBI inquiry.

The state government cancelled the exam on October 11. Over a lakh candidates had appeared for the test, which was held for 416 vacancies in different government departments.

After the leak came to light, the government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Rishikesh Superintendent of Police Jaya Baluni to look into the case.

The SIT found that Khalid Malik, who was one of the exam candidates, had taken photos of three pages of the question paper with his mobile phone. He sent them to his sister, Sabia, who forwarded them to Suman, an assistant professor in Tehri, to get the answers.

Suman took screenshots of the questions and shared them with another person. Instead of informing the police or the commission, that person uploaded the pages on social media, making them go viral.

The SIT has arrested Khalid and Sabia in the case. Four others, including Suman, have been suspended from their duties.
